So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen the applications....

The show will take place Saturday April 28th, 2012 from 12pm to 5pm at Passyunk and Tasker Ave in South Philadelphia in conjunction with Flavors of the Avenue. More info to follow!
Please keep in mind this is an outdoor show with no rain date. Tents are your friend.
Applications are due by March 25th, 2012. Can't wait to see all those applications start rolling in!

I love working with anything old, any forgotten treasure from the past. Collecting the elements I use in my pieces is my favorite part of the work that I do, sometimes I find things and know immediately what they will become when I get them home,while others may be stashed away in my art room for years before I will use them.
For me there is something comforting about giving new life to an item that was once loved but had been forgotten years ago. I love working with pieces that show tell tale signs of their age and will always choose to showcase the time worn patina of a found item instead of polishing it's past life away.

Mama May I is Jessica Perkins. Here's a little of what Jessica has to say about creating things. "I have been interested in creating for as long as I can remember. I have memories designing things on paper and bringing them to my Mom to help me make them into real life objects. Sewing is a skill I am excited to pass on to my children. I have so many great memories, staying up past my bedtime just so I could finish a project."

Tell us about yourself! Mama May i started out in May of 2009 with most of my toys being handmade ribbon blankets and sewn playthings. As my first daughter grew, I had to find new ways to challenge my little scientist, and I started expanding into other handmade learning toys (wooden toys, counting play sets, and colorful gadgets). Since I believe children make sense of their worlds through sensing their worlds, and have always been inspired by Montessori and Waldorf methodologies, it seemed a natural progression. All of my products for Mama May i are designed for education and learning through play. I create with this philosophy in mind and encourage folks visiting my shop to dive in, make a splash, a scribble, or an inquisitive fiddle on the memories your little ones!

Okay Hooray! is printmaker Caroline Ziegler. I hear if you are lucky, she might break out into an impromtu song. Come to Crafty Balboa Holiday to find out!

Tell us about yourself! I'm a printmaker and crafter! As a printmaker, I mostly carve and print wood and linoleum blocks. Much of my work is narrative, so many of my prints include text in the form of short poems or stories. Whenever possible, I print with wood and lead type using traditional letterpress equipment.

I also love needle-crafts. Embroidery, felt and crochet allow me to create 3D characters which beg for their own stories. My characters are quirky, playful, and sometimes even mischievous.

Is there something special you are bringing to Crafty Balboa?This year I want to share my love of embroidery, so I've created mermaid and merman embroidery finger puppet kits! It comes with everything you need and a booklet of detailed instructions to create your own merfolk.

They're fun for anyone interested in learning embroidery or already familiar with it that's into puppets and/or merfolk! They range from $15-$25 (the more expensive kits are hand painted).

Kaye Rachelle Designs is a partnership between Bonnie Kaye Whitfield + Susan R. Dreifuss. Bonnie loves patterns & spends most of her time threading needles & picking out trim. Susie is a master of color & spends most of her time holding a squeegee & collecting fabric samples.

What is it you do? We combine refined aesthetics and modern design with hand screen printing to create unique textiles for the home, such as placemats, cloth napkins, tea towels, pillows, and wall organizers. Every design has a story. Every color is mixed by hand. We (Bonnie Kaye Whitfield + Susan R. Dreifuss) met in Brooklyn while getting our MFAs in Printmaking from Pratt Institute - and have collaborated from our studios in Philadelphia, PA & Summit, NJ ever since we graduated in 2010.

Rachel Shoshana's jewelry designs have an earthy, handmade aesthetic. By creating every piece by hand, her jewelry has a personal feel as they are all slightly different.

What is it you do? I do sterling silver, brass and gemstone jewelry. I recently have become rather obsessed with using brass and silver together. I love how they play so well together and how brass gets this warm tone to it the more you wear it. But the real key to my heart is gemstones (as it is for every girl!) I love using natural stones and allowing them to sparkle and shine as the star of the jewelry I make!

Tell us about a great gift idea from your collection. Right now my favorite gift is the set of my brass and silver hoop earrings. They are hand formed and hammered that go with every outfit. I also have started making a bib necklace that will match these earrings that is set to debut at Crafty! I can't wait to see what everyone says about it.

All I want for Christmas is... I would love to get a bigger torch. I love my torch now and would love to be able to make larger pieces and let my creative spirit really soar! I also love my torch now so that helps keep me motivated to come into the studio to play with everything.

The Large Mammal has been going his thing for about 10 years, and in that time has "created a huge catalog of screen-printed badassery for all to enjoy."

Tell us what you do! I make limited edition screen prints and art prints. I've been dragging a squeegee since 2002, making rock posters for some of the best indie bands around.

In recent years I've moved more into art prints. Bright color, geometric shapes and lots of texture are the consistent theme. My creative goals are simple. Make things that have meaning, that are meaningful.

What's a great gift item you will be bringing to Crafty Balboa Holiday? I made this art print a while back with the word HOME on it. The image was originally used for a Feist gigposter, but I wanted to make a kind of welcome piece to hang in my house and it was a perfect fit.
It's a great gift for a new homeowner, something to brighten a drab apartment, a good gift for girlfriends, for moms, etc. It's available for $30, and fits nicely into an inexpensive Ikea RIbba frame.

Natural history, field guides, Shaker objects, folklore, daydreams, the Arctic, libraries, and children’s drawings, these are the things I think about and why my work looks the way it does.

Katie VanVliet is a busy lady. From managing a local art boutique/gallery, and exhibiting her work all over the country, to running BYO Studio here in Philadelphia, we're lucky she finds the time to make it to Crafty Balboa to share her wonderful work with us!

Tell us what you do! I etch copper. Mostly, it's to pull intaglio prints from, but sometimes I use those etching techniques to etch unique objects, like lockets, pendants, and plaques. Once, I etched a brass doorknob.

What kind of gift options will you be bringing to Crafty Balboa Holiday? I'll be bringing lots of loose prints that you can give to budding art collectors, or anyone with a taste for art and wall space to spare! Most of my prints are about $50 each, and they fit a standard size frame for your convenience. They're depictions of whimsical places and spaces, with odd little characters too.

All I want for Christmas is... a giant sheet of roofing copper, to make new prints!!!

Our designs range from crazy and colorful to more subdued and pretty. Everything is printed on our antique printing presses, on 100% cotton paper.

What is it you do? Garbella creates hand screen-printed apparel for women, men, and babies as well as, accessories, and home decor. From start to finish, garbella goods are drawn, designed, and hand screen-printed in Pittsburgh, PA. Garbella also offers clocks that are made with recycled bicycle cogs and some that are hand screen-printed with original designs.

What kinds of great gift items will you be bringing to Crafty Balboa? I'll be bringing lots of hand screen printed apparel and accessories. My most popular gift item are screen printed jersey cotton scarves. They are really soft and easier to wear. Scarves are $22.

Please tell us about yourself. I'm a letterpress printer, which can mean a lot of things these days. There's been a huge letterpress resurgence and a lot of people are involving digital design in their work. I am incredibly bad at digital design so I work with {mostly} vintage wood and metal type. This leads to prints that are almost entirely text based, infused with my own questionable sense of humor.

Is there anything new and/or exciting you are bringing to Crafty Balboa Holiday?! One of my new items that I'm most excited about are the "i like your bike" tags. This is an idea that I've been mulling over for YEARS! These tags are great for any bike enthusiast in your life and make a perfect stocking stuffer. Basically, they were inspired by all the beautiful bikes in Philadelphia - I'm always stopping and gawking and wish I had a way to let the bike's owner know how much I appreciate their ride. Pick them up in a set of 6 for $8.

What is it you do? We are dedicated to continuing the stories contained in old and unwanted objects, by recombining them into functional pieces that encourage a sustainable lifestyle. Our materials come from all over the Philadelphia region. We transform unwanted desks, tables, doors, and moldings into unique objects for the home and garden.

What can we expect to see December 17th? We will be bringing a lot of Birdhouses! These are for anyone that wants to create a home for some feathered friends, especially city dwellers. We like to think that we are helping to create new habitats for birds that did not exist before. Our birdhouses are about $80.

Their appreciation of wearable art on torso fabric along with the rest of the world's exasperation at two people talking about t-shirts for hours a day helped their friendship turn into a burgeoning new business enterprise. Evan Ferstenfeld's current "real" job is working in an ER saving lives through processing endless paperwork, and Roni Lagin is a graphic designer.

Typsy Gyspy tees is a family run screen printing company that specializes in hand draw designs. We started printing tee shirt for two reasons. My job as an art teacher at Moore Collage of Art and Design lead me to screen printing. When my boss called me and asked me if I could teach a screen printing class, I had to say yes even though screen printing was not something I had done before. With little time to learn, my husband and I set up a studio in our basement and began practicing. Soon we were working as a team; I was designing the work and He was perfecting the art of preparing the screens and printing.

At the same time, my five year old son was in desperate need of some cool tee shirts that would express his love of natural history and bizarre sea creatures. The average retailer only offered cutsy designs for kids his age. The ferocious beasts that he obssessed over in ocean textbooks were no where to be...

METROPOLIS SOAP

Metropolis soap comes from simple ingredients. First we select 100% vegan oils like vitamin-rich coconut oil, luxurious sunflower oil, and moisturizing shea butter, which all are a part of our time-tested recipe. We choose our oils for their skin-loving properties, as well as their ability to create a hard, durable soap that will last. Next the oils are mixed with a carefully measured amount of distilled water and sodium hydroxide, which causes the chemical reaction that makes soap! The oils and water are blended together and once the ingredients have officially made soap we add our own specially formulated essential oil blends. These blends are created for their aromatherapy properties as much as their scent abilities! The soap batter is then poured into our handmade wooden molds and colored with mica powder. After 36 hours the soap logs are released from their molds so that we can cut each bar by hand and set them on our curing racks. After a 4-6 week cure process we test each batch to ensure quality and safety (we have a lot of soap in our home!). Once the batch is proven up to our standards, we release it for sale.

Metropolis Soap Co. is not only vegan-friendly, but eco-conscious, too! Our products contain no palm oil, which contributes to deforestation and causes many orang utans to become homeless! Every item features Sara's original illustrations and diagram designs, and most items are printed by hand, one at a time, in a smoke-free studio. Hello! I am graduate of Tyler School of Art with a major in Fibers. I am also currently a graduate student at Drexel University to receive my Masters degree in Fashion Design.

I make many handmade items including bags, clothing, accessories, and housewares. Living in the city has made me focus on styles and designs geared towards the city life but can also be used everywhere. Lots of comfy hands free bags; Great for biking, shopping, or an everyday carry-all.

These 4x6 inch planners feature about 80 weeks of hot, planning action - which for all you math-magicians out there, is roughly a year and a half if you use it non-stop. (Or if you are like me, it should last you a good 5 years or more - because I always put them somewhere dumb and don't find them again for a few months.)

We take discarded old storybooks (lots of the ex-library copies) and give them new life as journals, jewelries and other fun gifts. We use as much as we possibly can from the books we chop so that they can be enjoyed for years to come, just in their new guise!

Rotorcaps are made with materials from everyday life that would normally end up in the trash. My aim is to transform these materials into jewelry for adornment and quirky personal expression. It is also to get people excited about recycling and the idea that we can look at these items in a different way and see that there is beauty and value in them. I collect bottle caps from local bars here in Philly. I save cans and tins - pretty much anything that is printed on metal will do. Most importantly though, Rotorcaps are about fun!
